Target Species

Fishing takes as much skill as it does luck. So get to know your fish here!

Although there are a multitude of different marine species here on Kauai, some are much more sought after than others.  Below is a compiled list of common target species found on island, including various methods to target each species.

Quick Note:

Although in Hawaii it is common practice to share what we have. It is important to note that not all anglers share the same respect for the ocean and our natural recourses. That being said, these species below are targeted for one reason here in Hawaii, for the dinner plate.  Hawaii's resources are limited. If you do not plan on eating your catch ahead of time, please release your fish with respect and please do what you can to give them the best chance for survival upon release.

Target Species

Jacks-Papio-Omilu-Ulua

By far the most targeted species in Hawaii. A powerful and intelligent fish known for their strong fights. Click HERE for more info.

Vegetarians-Kala-Nenue-Parrotfish

Goatfishes-Weke-Oama-Moana Kali

This species set can be identified by their two distinctive wiskers under their lip. Many different varieties can be found around the islands. Click HERE to see which ones you can find around Kauai.

Big Eye Emperor-Mu

A very unique species with a major appetite for various shellfish. Specialized jaws and teeth allow them to crush invertebrates with ease. Prized for their meat quality and yield, click HERE to learn more.
