The GOAT

A common sight among snorkelers and divers. You can usually find goatfishes in small numbers or grouped among other reef fishes sifting through the sandy bottom in search of food. Although goatfishes come in a variety of colors, they all have one distinct feature. A set of specialized whiskers rests below the goatfishes mouth. These whiskers are full of sensory receptors and are used to feel and smell out small crustaceans hiding in the sand.

Special Notes

Try to get the bait as low as can without getting stuck. it takes practice and youll lose a lot of rigs. I like squid strips or purple plastics.

My perfered method as it reduces the amount of gear youll lose. Use thinner hooks if targeting this species as they tend to "gum" their food before fully comitting.

There are MANY varieties of goat fishes in Hawaii. Each with its own unique traits and colorations and they all taste great!  Light flesh, mild taste.
