Kala me this
Another common sight among snorkelers are the various vegetarian species seen feeding on algae and seaweed. One of the most unique fish that can be caught while shore fishing in Kauai would be the unicorn fish or Kala. It sports a distinctive single horn and four, bright turquoise scales as sharp as a scalpel on its tail.
Kala along with other strict vegetarian species such as nenue and illusive panuhunuhunu have fairly predictable feeding habits. Due to our large sea turtle population, the best vegetation is only accessible during high tide. So like clockwork you can find these various species feeding from the seaweed beds as the tides rise.
